I regret to inform you that Dan Jr. passed away on December 30, 2024. Before his retirement in 2018, Dr. Smith served as Professor of Physics at South Carolina State University. Affectionately known as “Dr. Dan,” he was a “Renaissance” man, scholarly, deeply connected, impactful, and proficient in a wide range of fields such as photography, art, and African American Life and History. His published work includes a book, “African-Americans and Charleston: Histories Intertwined.” He is survived by his sisters, Mildred Washington and Etta Waugh, and extended family and friends. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am on January 11, 2025, at Howard University Dunbarton Chapel, West Campus, 2900 Van Ness Street, NW, Washington, DC.
